Knucklebones (astragali) was a popular Roman game played with the small anklebones of a sheep. Each bone has 6 sides.

Every player has five bones. The idea is to throw the bones into the air and catch them on the back of your hand. Each player takes it in turn and the winner is the one with the highest score. Another game you can try goes like this. Throw one bone in the air and pick one from the ground. Next time try and pick up two bones from the ground, then three and so on.
This is how the modern game of 'Jacks' began. The Romans made it more exciting by betting on who would win. You could play for the last sweet in the packet or your choice of television programme!
