British Watercolours: Vision & Imagination Teachers Resource
Vision & Imagination is a major new exhibition of rarely-seen British watercolours. Dreams, visions, and poetic stories have inspired generations of watercolour painters. In this exhibition, the watercolours range from William Blake’s spiritually inspired art to JMW Turner’s visionary response to light and landscape. The poetic scenes of the Pre-Raphaelites are also featured, together with the fantastic dreamscapes and emotional imagery of twentieth-century artists.
Watercolour has often been thought of as a key part of Britain’s cultural heritage. The modesty and
informality of the medium have been seen as unusually well-suited to the ‘national character’. But
is this true?
In this exhibition you can see how watercolour has been used in many different ways, by painters
of very different backgrounds and interests. There isn’t just one story of ‘Watercolour in Britain’.
Vision & Imagination features selected artists and topics from four world-class collections of British
art – Norwich, Newcastle, Sheffield and Tate Britain.
