Things to see and do

18th and 19th Century Collection
The Laing's impressive permanent collection encourages visitors to return to the Gallery on a regular basis. Highlights include John Martin's breathtaking The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and William Holman Hunt's poignant painting of Isabella and the Pot of Basil.

Barbour Watercolour Gallery
Internationally important British watercolours are displayed in this beautiful gallery. The works on show change regularly to show the impressive range of watercolours in the collection so please contact the gallery if you wish to see a particular piece of work.

Under Fives' Area
Children love this fun play area, which helps them to discover more about art with the aid of a dressing up box, games and puzzles.

How to book

Please let us know in advance if you would like to make a visit. This allows us to avoid overcrowding in the building and gives you better access to the gallery's displays.

To book please telephone the Learning Team on 0191 211 2104. If you would like to make a visit enquiry or make a booking you can use our online visit enquiry form

Facilities

There are toilets in the Marble Hall, at the back of the cafe and next to the education room as well as an accessible toilet in the lower shop.

The shop has a range of inexpensive souvenir items for children. If you allow children to use the shop please plan in plenty of time for them to do so. It is helpful for us if you bring children to the shop in groups of 10 children or less.

The Laing has a large café which is fully accessible and has high chairs for babies.

On the day

All visiting groups should report to the reception desk just inside the front doors. You will be asked to sign in as a precaution in case of a fire alarm. The front of house staff will then advise you where to go as necessary.
