Education awards for Tyneside museums

Staff at three museums in Tyneside are celebrating after being granted awards for their educational work.

Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum and South Shields Museum & Art Gallery in South Shields and Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum in Wallsend have all been awarded Sandford Awards by the Heritage Education Trust.

The Awards are made annually and are non-competitive, recognising quality and excellence in the educational services and facilities at heritage sites.

The judges for the Awards include OFSTED Inspectors, former head teachers, education consultants and heritage property based education officers.

The judges praised Segedunum for its ‘exceptionally dedicated and creative learning department’ and admired the ‘interesting and imaginative workshops’ on offer at Arbeia Roman Fort and South Shields Museum.

Ian Thilthorpe, senior manager for North and South Tyneside Museums says:

“I am delighted that the hard work and dedication of our staff in the learning team has been rewarded by the Heritage Education Trust. Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums is especially proud of the new learning programmes that have been developed at these venues in recent years.”

Councillor Tracey Dixon, Lead Member for Culture and Wellbeing at South Tyneside Council, says:

“We are thrilled that Arbeia and South Shields Museum and Art Gallery have gained prestigious Sandford Awards for delivering first class heritage learning programmes. It is such a tremendous achievement.

“The awards acknowledge the fantastic work of the staff and reflect their dedication to giving local schoolchildren, as well as residents and visitors of all ages, an unforgettable experience through hands-on activities and stimulating programmes.

“Both venues give a fascinating insight into the history and heritage of South Tyneside. They are well used and much loved by our communities. We are very proud of them.”
