Photomapping our World
Friday 5 November 2010
Photomapping our World: A photography project commissioned as part of Juice: Newcastle Gateshead’s award winning festival for children and young people. Visit the exhibition at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle until 2 January 2011.
For this exhibition, commissioned especially for Juice Festival, Children from Year 6 at St Aidan’s C of E Primary School worked with the Shipley Art Gallery and the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize Exhibition, and internationally known photographers, Gideon Mendel and Crispin Hughes, to create a photographic portfolio describing their lives. All the photographs were taken during one week in June, coinciding with the start of the world cup. The children have documented their own lives, photographing themselves, their families and friends.
Gideon Mendel said
“The project has been about giving kids inspiration and helping them to see. I have to say that they have done amazingly well.”
“I aim very high. This isn’t just a kids’ thing. I want the outcome of this project to blow adults away"
The exhibition resulting from the project is now open at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle until 2 January 2011.
