Things to see and do

Archives offer students and teachers a hands on experience with unique primary sources. Groups can research the history of Tyne and Wear from the Tudors to the present day. Projects might include:

  • Investigating Tudor Newcastle through guild and city council records
  • Profiling a Victorian locality using census returns, parish records, building plans, maps and street directories
  • Studying the Home Front with posters, letters and ARP reports of air raids

How to book

Group visits must be pre-booked. Visits are tailored to individual group needs and are best discussed in detail in advance. Teacher visits are welcome. Visits to schools by the Archives Outreach Team may be possible.

For more details contact peter.hepplewhite@twmuseums.org.uk or telephone 0191 2772243 - if your call is not answered please leave a message on the answer phone.

Facilities

Group visits are usually hosted in the Archives Education Room though special projects may include conservation demonstrations or behind the scenes tours. Bag storage and eating spaces are available in Discovery Museum. Joint visits to both services are encouraged.

On the day

Please report to reception on arrival at Discovery Museum. Once you are signed in you will be taken to Tyne & Wear Archives where a member of the Learning Team will meet you and explain the procedures for the day.
