Christmas Opening

Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum will be closed between 19 December 2011 to 13 January 2012 inclusive. If you have a school related enquiry please email segedunumlearningbookings@twmuseums.org.uk. The Learning Team will respond to your email as soon as possible, however there may be a small delay due to staff capacity over the festive season.

Things to see and do

The Roman Gallery houses objects which were excavated at the fort. The Industry Gallery celebrates Wallsend’s mining and shipbuilding history. The Temporary Exhibition gallery has a changing programme of exhibitions, please visit www.twmuseums.org.uk/segedunum for up to date information. The 35m Viewing Tower gives a bird’s eye view of the site and the surrounding landscape in which Segedunum is set. From here you can see the Excavated Remains which have been laid out as a Second Century Roman Fort, the only example in the UK. A reconstructed Bath House with frescoes and reconstructed section of Hadrian’s Wall which sits alongside the original can also be explored.

How to book

All school and group visits to Segedunum must be booked in advance. To book please telephone the museum on (0191) 236 9347. A confirmation letter will be sent to you when you have made your booking with Teachers' Pack (if requested). An itinerary for your visit will then be drawn up.

The itinerary includes the time for your trip to the Viewing Tower and the time for your lunch sitting(s). Your pupils will be divided into groups of 30 to help us meet the safety regulations in these areas. We draw up the itinerary to ensure that your visit fits smoothly with any other groups that may be on site on the day. If you would like to discuss details of your booking and plans for your group, please phone our Museum’s Front of House team who are happy to answer any questions and make adjustments. You will be given the day's itinerary sheet for all visiting groups on your arrival at Segedunum.

Further enquires can also be emailed to the Assistant Learning Officer nihad.khwaja@twmuseums.org.uk

Facilities

Segedunum has toilets and cloakrooms. Packed lunches can be eaten in the activities room if booked in advance (no charge). The room seats 60, so you may have to stagger lunch if your group is larger than this. There is a café which serves hot food which must be pre-booked for large groups.

There are lifts to the viewing tower, the café and activity room. There are a number of accessible toilets on site also. If you or a member of your group has any specific special requirement please discuss this with staff and we will make appropriate adjustments.

On the day

The museum opens at 10am.
On arrival please arrange your party into groups and contact the Reception Desk where staff will check the number in your party, accept payment (where necessary – please make cheques payable to City of Newcastle - minimum payment is £5) and issue you with your itinerary for the day and cloakroom keys if required. They will then show you where to store bags and coats.
Segedunum Fort is an outdoor site. Please ensure children wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
