Things to see and do

The museum has a permanent collection of original engines and carriages, ranging from Billy, one of the oldest steam locomotives in the world to a modern Metro cab. You can also explore the development of technology through interactive and multi-sensory displays. Find out about the waggonways and how they were the forerunners to the railways. Discover the great engineers George and Robert Stephenson and how their influence spread from their native North East throughout the world. Guided workshops, handling sessions and costumes are available to help bring the story of railways to life.

Facilities

The museum can accommodate parties of up to 60 children. A lunch area is available with adjacent toilets. The museum, activity room and toilets are all on ground level. Workshops can be adapted to meet access requirements. The museum is closed to the public during term time allowing exclusive access for schools and groups.


On the day

Coaches can park in the car park in front of the museum. Parties will be met at the entrance. Suitable, warm clothing is recommended.
