Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens will be closed between 24 December 2011 to 9 January 2012 inclusive. If you have a school related enquiry please email sunderlandlearning@twmuseums.org.uk. The Learning Team will respond to your email as soon as possible, however there may be a small delay due to staff capacity over the festive season.
Things to see and do
The varied collections include fine and decorative art, natural sciences, maritime and social history, textiles and archaeology. There is also an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions, including those from the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum. The temperate Winter Gardens contains over 1500 plants of more than 150 different species. Next to the Museum, Mowbray Park has been beautifully restored to its Victorian glory with formal lawns, a lake, sculptures and wildlife areas.

Facilities
Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens has two large learning rooms for use as classroom or packed lunch spaces for schools and visiting groups. These must be booked in advance. Mowbray Park beside the Museum makes an ideal venue for picnics when the weather is fine.
The learning rooms share two small accessible toilets.
The main male and female toilets are located on the ground floor opposite the learning rooms. There are accessible cubicles in the male and female toilets and a unisex family toilet with baby changing unit on the ground floor. In addition, there are accessible unisex toilets on each floor of the museum.
Eden Café provides a range of hot drinks, snacks and meals to suit every taste and budget.
On the day
The entrance to the Museum & Winter Gardens is situated on Burdon Road. There is a drop off point for minibuses and coaches on Burdon Road but no parking at the Museum. The nearest pay and display parking spaces are at Tavistock Place, Civic Centre or Tatham Street car parks. Please sign in at Museum reception on arrival.
The Museum opens at 10am and visitors will not usually be admitted before that time. Groups participating in booked workshops should arrive 15 minutes before their workshop start time, to allow for signing in and storing of coats and bags.
