Access Information for Segedunum Roman Fort

Parking

The museum has its own car park next to the museum entrance. Parking is free. Four parking bays are marked out as accessible parking bays for blue badge holders.

The nearest drop-off point by taxi, dial-a-ride, car or coach is beside the accessible parking bays next to the museum entrance.

Entrance

There is a long (about 50 metres), gradually sloping ramp descending to the front entrance. The gradient is 1 in 20. Large swing doors that need to be pulled open lead into the shop and reception area. There is a rear entrance on Station Road that can be used on request. This rear entrance slopes down at a gradient greater than 1 in 20.

Getting Around

Inside the Museum there are lifts and stairs providing access to all floors. Both lifts have voice announcers, Braille indicators and visual floor numbers. The museum is spread out across the ground and third floors. The café is on the third floor and the viewing tower is on the ninth floor. All floors have level access, apart from inside the viewing tower, which has steps down to the front windows. Outside, the reconstructed bathhouse and a sensory herb garden can be reached by a smooth path along the side of the excavated Fort remains. The rest of the site is rough ground due to the nature of the excavated site.

There is a large static tactile map in reception to help you orientate around the museum.

Seating

There are benches around the museum and in the bathhouse.

Borrowing a wheelchair

Four wheelchairs are available for use. They can be found at the end of the information area at reception. It is recommended that you book these in advance.

Gallery Plans

Standard, large print and Braille gallery plans are available from reception.

Pre-Visit Information

Pre-visit information packs are available to borrow for free for blind and partially sighted people to plan a visit. The packs include:

Dogs

We welcome assistance dogs. Reception can provide a bowl of water. Please note that there are no specific 'spending' areas located around Segedunum for assistance dogs to use.

Public telephone

One public telephone is available. A Minicom is available on request at reception.

Induction Loops

There is an induction loop in the film theatre on the third floor and induction loops in the Daniels and Corder function rooms on the fourth floor.

The displays

There are various exhibits to touch throughout the museum, including a bust of Hadrian, fabrics and a model of a Headquarters building. A tactile model of Segedunum Roman Fort is in production for blind visitors.

There are two film theatres with subtitles. Some of the ICT interactives have subtitles. A text version of the audio in the Commanding Officer's House area is available from reception.

Audio Guides

Audio guides at Segedunum will a tour of the Fort site. There is a children's and families tour in English, Norwegian, German and Dutch and an audio description tour for blind and partially sighted visitors.

The audio handset is similar to a television remote control. It has numbered push pads and play and pause buttons. There are optional earpieces and straps for hands free operation. The guide is free for blind and partially sighted people and is available from reception.

Museum and Guided Tours of the Site

The curator, visitor services and learning staff can lead tours on request. They last between Forty five minutes to an hour. You will need to book in advance.

Fire Alarms

The fire alarms give an audible bell warning and have visual flashing lights. The lifts can not be used in the event of a fire. There are evac-chairs to assist disabled people to exit the building and safe fire refuge points to await evacuation. These are clearly signposted. If you will need assistance to exit the building in the event of a fire alarm please tell a member of staff.

Toilets and baby changing

There are male and female toilets and accessible toilets at the rear of reception on the ground floor, on the third floor in the activities corridor, on the fourth floor in the function area and on the ground floor in the bathhouse. There is an accessible shower room at the rear of reception on the ground floor. There is baby changing at the rear of reception on the ground floor.

Eating at Flavia's Café

The café is on the third floor. Hot and cold drinks are available and meals or snacks at lunchtime. Large print menus, large handled cutlery and open ended handled mugs are available on request.
