Combine excellence in teaching with enjoyment in learning.

Segedunum Roman Fort lies on the banks of the River Tyne, and is the last outpost of Hadrian’s Wall (World Heritage Site). For almost 300 years Segedunum was home to 600 soldiers guarding the furthest reaches of the Empire. Today it has an interactive museum, 35m high viewing tower, excavated remains and reconstructions of a Bath House and Hadrian’s Wall.
Discovery sessions are available for 4-6 year olds, 7-12 year olds and 12 years+, designed to inspire learning about life at the fort and are led by museum staff.
Our dedicated Schools Online website is currently being updated for the new school term and will be relaunched shortly. Until then, please contact the venue directly for more information on (0191) 236 9347.
What is there to see?
Please see our Displays and Curriculum Links section for more details.
How do I book?
All school and group visits to Segedunum must be booked in advance. To book please telephone the museum on 0191 236 9347. A confirmation letter will be sent to you when you have made your booking (with Teachers' Pack if requested). An itinerary for your visit will then be drawn up.
The itinerary includes the time for your trip to the Viewing Tower and the time for your lunch sitting(s). Your pupils will be divided into groups of 30 to help us meet the safety regulations in these areas. We draw up the itinerary to ensure that your visit fits smoothly with any other groups that may be on site on the day. If you would like to discuss details of your booking and plans for your group, please phone our Visitor Services team who are happy to answer any questions and make adjustments. You will be given the day's itinerary sheet for all visiting groups on your arrival at Segedunum.
If you would like to make a visit enquiry for an event that requires booking you can use our online visit enquiry form.
Can I make a preliminary visit?
Visits are self guided unless an education workshop has been booked (see below), so it is highly recommended that you visit Segedunum before you come with your group. You will then be familiar with the layout of the Museum, Baths and Fort, and the location of the toilets, shop and activities room. Teachers coming to view the Museum prior to a school visit are not charged the entry fee.
How much will a visit cost?
Under 16s are free. Group admission starts when admitting 10 or more people.
How do I pay?
Schools can pay on the day or be invoiced after their visit (minimum of £5 an invoice). Please make cheques payable to 'City of Newcastle.'
What do I do on arrival?
Please arrange your party into groups and contact the Reception Desk where staff will check the number in your party, accept payment and issue you with your itinerary for the day and cloakroom keys if required. They will then show you where to store bags and coats.
How many adults should I bring?
Each group of 6 children under the age of 11 should be accompanied by one adult. Please note that there is free admission for one adult per 6 children to allow for this. Extra adults will be charged at £2.75 each. If there are any children in the group who have their own carer there is no admission charge for the carer.
Are there any safety issues?
The Fort site, Bath House and Hadrian's Wall site can be hazardous in places. There are walls, banks and sunken features which should be approached with caution. Please do not leave children unsupervised. Suitable footwear should be worn.
Where can we have lunch?
Packed lunches can be eaten in the activities room if booked in advance (no charge). The room seats 60, so you may have to stagger lunch if your group is larger than this.
Are there toilets?
Segedunum has accessible toilets on all levels.
Is there a shop?
The attractive shop sells books and gifts. There is also a wide range of small inexpensive items for children on sale in the shop.
Do you have a risk assessment?
No, but we have already identified the hazards for you. The hazard identification forms can be found in the download section.
Are there any downloads?
Teacher's packs and hazard ID's can be found in the download section of the website.
A café serves hot food and drinks. If you wish your party to eat in the café pre-booking is advised to avoid long queues.
