View of an Emperor: Hadrian's Marble Portrait
14 Aug - 04 Oct 2009
Come face to face with the Emperor Hadrian. On display at Segedunum this summer is a marble bust of Hadrian, found after 1721 during excavations at Hadrian’s vast country residence near Tivoli in Italy.
The bust, on loan from the British Museum, shows Hadrian in military uniform, identifying him as Commander-in-Chief of the Roman Army. The style and carving technique of the sculpture suggest it was made early in his reign by Greek craftsmen.
