Shipley Lates: Stitched Up
25 September, 6-10pm
Join us for a specially crafted evening of subversive stitch. Needles at the ready!
Listen in on exclusive talks pushing the boundaries of stitching and needlework:
David Littler combines the worlds of embroidery and DJ-ing through the common word ‘Sampler’ as part of his Crafts Council-funded project Sampler-Culture Clash.Read David Littler's Blog here.
Through collaborating with embroiderers, dj’s, beat-boxers, performance poets, filmmakers and curators from the V&A and the Embroiderers’ Guild, the aim of the project is to develop new interdisciplinary work mixing stitch, the word, pattern, sound and performance. The project will combine analogue and digital technologies and will reflect the similar practices of both cultures; to trial, experiment and mix things up. David will be demonstrating his project by taking an embroidered piece from the TWAM collection and translating it into sound.
Michael Brennan Wood is internationally regarded as one of the most innovative and inspiring artists working in textiles today. His work combines historical knowledge and understanding of textile techniques and history with contemporary materials and themes.
Recent work inspired by traditions of floral imagery have utilised computerised machine embroidery, acrylic paint, wood, glass and collage. Exploring the illusionary space between two and three dimensions, these works are colourful, dramatic, rhythmic and holographic in feel with intense detail that merges at a distance into bold patterns.
Neon Knitting Corner
Sit back and enjoy the entertainment while knitting your own day-glo creations.
Glittyknittykitty
Glittrgirl uses her Glittyknittykittyblog (www.glittyknittykitty.co.uk) to challenge perceptions about what knitting is and where it belongs. Glittyknittykitty shows a mixture of Glittrgirl's work and that of others whilst encouraging people to take part themselves.
Glittrgirl has devised a challenge Shipley Lates: Stitched Up called 'Twitter Knitter', based on the 140 character limit on social networking site Twitter. We will be asking visitors to join Glittrgirl in her informal knitting corner to produce a knitted piece using 140 stitches or less. The pieces will be combined to produce a Twitter Knitter stream that will become part of the Shipley handling collection.
Fanzine
Debbora Hall of the Cuckoo Press will be producing a limited edition fanzine at the Late. As well as contributions from the evening's speakers, Debbora will be asking for contributions from visitors-tips, pictures of work etc. Editions will be given to visitors at the end of the night.
Lucky dip cloakroon
Artist Kate Stobbart will be running a 'cloakroom' on the night where visitors can leave their coats or other items of clothing and have a label stitched into them from a lucky dip. The labels all have phrases from everyday life embroidered on them with a variety of sentiments - some are compliments, some insults!
Get Crafty
Alizon Bennet will be leading two activities on the evening including corsage making and urban cross stitch.
Music: DIY Disco
Visitors can bring their own records to be played on the night, or can choose a record from our selection.
The Shipley’s pay bar will be serving a one-off cocktail designed for the evening alongside wine, beer and soft drinks.
