Shipley Lates: Design Overtime
26 Nov
6 - 10pm
The Shipley Lates 2010 will end with a very special evening celebrating the best in design. The event will feature rising stars from the design world using their skills to solve questions of space, cost, style and sustainability. The Shipley’s annual Christmas Present exhibition will showcase the work of designers from across the North East.
Special guests Will Shannon and Kieran Jones who are both Royal College of Art Graduates, will be speaking about their design work and also their collaborative work with Studio Superniche.
Designer Will Shannon, was assistant to Anthony Gormley for 3 years and his work explores the city as a resource that can provide the raw materials for the production of goods. It proposes ways in which local materials and localised manufacture can allow new, lightweight industries to be reintroduced to the city.
One of Kieran Jones’ recent projects involved using IKEA’s best selling products, the POANG chair and BUMERANG clothes hangers, to create new products such as a sled, a stag’s head and a crossbow that fires IKEA pencils. Kieren also created do-it-yourself manuals that guide the user through the necessary steps to create these new products. Some of these pieces were recently on display at the Shipley as part of the popular exhibition Craftivism: Objects to Change the World.
Together, Will Shannon and Kieran Jones form part of Studio Superniche which is a collective of architects and designers based in London. Their goal is to champion the cause of the niche against the tide of the generic. One of their recent projects was The Blue Fence Project which used pieces of the blue plywood security fence from the London 2012 Olympic Games site to produce urban furniture such as benches, seats and even a ping pong table.
The Shed, Gateshead will be showcasing seven up and coming designers from the North East in their pop up Shed including lighting from Aether and Hemera, jewellery by Laura Hebron and Corinne Lewis, textiles by Jo Dale, ceramics by Chris McHugh, photography by Laura Jane Vest Photography and designer wallets by Boreal. This will offer a rare chance to buy directly from the designers who will be present on the evening to showcase their latest designs.
As usual, visitors will have the opportunity to take part in hands on activities where they can have a go at the recent phenomena of IKEA Hacking led by Kieran Jones.
Visitors will also have the chance to do a bit of Christmas shopping in the Christmas Present exhibition which this year features a wide range of products from local designers and makers including jewellery, furniture, ceramics, textiles, and glass.
A DJ will provide a soundtrack of music and for visitors with a sweet tooth, the Pet Lamb Patisserie will be serving up delightful cupcakes with flair.
A free bus service will run throughout the evening from Newcastle, through Gateshead and on to the Shipley. For further information, including a bus timetable visit www.twmuseums.org.uk/shipley/shipleylates or find the Gallery on Facebook or Twitter.
Shipley Lates is sponsored by IKEA Gateshead who are keen to support design and culture in the local community.
