Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums has announced today that it has been successful in its application to Arts Council England for Renaissance major grant funding.

The Arts Council received 29 eligible applications from museums across the country requesting £116.4 million over three years, against a total budget for the Renaissance major grants programme for 2012-15 of around £60 million.

Funding has been offered to 16 applicants, however the total amount of funding requested is c. £23.5million and the overall budget for Renaissance major grants is £20million. Over the coming weeks the final amount awarded to each organisation for 2012-2015 will be confirmed.

The bid was judged against five goals set by Arts Council:

Excellence is thriving and celebrated in museums
More people experience and are inspired by museums
Museums are sustainable, resilient and innovative
The leadership and workforce in museums are diverse and highly skilled
Every child and young person has the opportunity to experience the richness of museums

Alison Clark-Jenkins, Regional Director, North East, Arts Council England said:

“We are delighted to announce that Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums has secured Major partner museums Renaissance funding. This will enable the group to deliver even more innovative exhibition programming, continue its valuable work with children and young people, and engage with the wider community in exciting ways.

“Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums is also home to some world class collections, and their 12 venues have played a vital part in shaping the cultural landscape of the region, and we look forward to seeing their plans for the future come to life.”

Ged Bell, Chair of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums Joint Committee, said:

“This is excellent news and we are delighted that this considerable investment from Arts Council is being made in our museums and galleries, recognising the important role they play in the social, cultural and economic make-up of our region.”

Iain Watson, Director of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, said:

“We are confident that we can deliver Arts Council’s goals and we are looking forward to continuing to make a difference in people’s lives through providing quality museum and archive services.”

Some of the areas Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) will use this Renaissance investment to fund include a programme of innovative exhibitions bringing together regional and national collections as well as exhibitions and activities working with communities.

TWAM will take a leading role in major festivals and events that bring partnerships within the museums, heritage and arts sector, including continuing the annual Museums at Night event, The Late Shows which attracted more than 24,000 visits over one weekend in May 2011.
