160 Years of the Shields Gazette

Celebrate the Shields Gazette's 160th birthday with this new display. From its birth in 1849 to the present day, discover the history of the oldest provincial evening newspaper in Britain. The display includes archive editions of the paper, including the VE Day edition and the front page that told of Catherine Cookson's death. Also on show are various artefacts relating to the newspaper trade, including printing plates from throughout the paper's history.
The display can be found on the first floor of the museum, with one display case at the top of the stairs and one by the lift.
