









Access Information for Stephenson Railway Museum
Entrance
There is a short gentle ramp leading to the main entrance from the car park. One set of double doors lead into the entrance.
Getting Around
The museum is all on one level. It has a very simple layout with aisles between the rows of large exhibits. The floor is uneven in some areas, where rail tracks are embedded in the surface.
Seating
Lightweight plastic chairs and bench seating with arms are available throughout the museum.
Gallery Plans
A site plan is in production and will be made available in large print and tactile (touch) formats.
Dogs
We welcome assistance dogs. We can provide a bowl of water.
The displays
Many of the exhibits can be freely touched. There is one audio visual display. There is a new multi-sensory experience for blind and partially sighted people capturing the essence of a train ride.
Museum and Guided Tours of the Site
Touch tours can be arranged through the assistant learning officer, who is usually available Monday to Wednesday. Please contact the museum for details.
Fire alarms
The fire alarms only give an audible bell warning. If you are likely to be unable to hear the alarms or will need assistance to evacuate the building in the event of a fire alarm please tell a member of staff.
Toilets and baby changing
There are male and female toilets and accessible toilets in the main entrance. Baby changing is available in the accessible toilet.
Tea room
In the main entrance, there is a self service tea room, which is open on event days.
