Explore the Museum's locomotive exhibits, from steam to metro. Investigate the development of electricity over the 20th century, discover the wildlife beside the railway tracks and learn why train wheels are the shape they are. Displays chart the history of transport on Tyneside in the 1900s and include a newly restored electric engine from 1909.

Stephenson Railway Museum is an essential part of any transport study and workshops covering Victorian life, seaside holidays in the past take place throughout the year. Self led trails are available for KS1, 2 & 3. How do I book?

All school visits must be booked in advance. To book please telephone the Learning Team at Stephenson Railway Museum on 0191 200 7146. Any queries can be answered when booking.

Can I make a preliminary visit?

A preliminary visit is recommended in order for you to familiarise yourself with the exhibits and building layout.

How much will a visit cost?

A visit to the Museum is free.

What do I do on arrival?

Groups should enter the main Museum building on arrival; a member of museum staff will greet you.

Are there any safety issues?

Most of the Museum's engines are in working order. This means that they are oiled frequently. Children are advised not to climb on engines or touch working parts, in order to avoid dirtying their clothes.

Where can we have lunch?

There is a picnic area outside. If a lunch space is required please advise staff when booking the visit and a space will be arranged.

Is there are shop?

Small inexpensive items for children are on sale in the shop. It is advisable to visit the shop in small groups.

Are there toilets?

There are toilets including an accessible toilet inside the building.

Do you have a risk assessment?

No, but we have already identified the hazards for you. The hazard identification forms can be found in the download section.

Are there any downloads?
