Permanent Galleries

Steam Train
Visitors can take a ride on a real steam train. Just a short walk from the main building is the venue's own train line which transports visitors from the Museum to Percy Main Village and back. The trains run on certain days of the year so visitors are advised to contact the Museum for more information.

Steam Powered electric and diesel engines
The permanent exhibits date from the 1820s through to the 1980s and consist of steam-powered electric and diesel engines. See George Stephenson's engine 'Billy' which was used to pull wagons of coal, compare steam engines with diesel and electric ones and discover the impact of the coal industry on the region.

The Electric Century
The Electric Century exhibition explores the history of electric transport on Tyneside in the early 1900s and includes the newly restored electric engine E4 which was used to pull coal wagons on the Harton Colliery line from 1909. Discover the history of electricity and how little it was used in the home when the E4 was first built.
