Chinese New Year

To celebrate the exhibition China: Journey to the East, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens will be celebrating Chinese New Year in style with a series of free family events to welcome in the Year of the Tiger.

Visitors are invited to take part in activities such as food tasting, puppet show performances and Chinese crafts and music. The exhibition will be on display from 30 January - 9 May 2010 and activities will take place throughout this time.

Family fun activities

Saturday 30 January , 11am – 12noon & 1pm – 3pm
Shine a Light

Create Chinese lanterns with modern designs inspired by the China: Journey to the East exhibition. Part of Sunderland SHINE - Urban Garden festival. Drop in activity.

Saturday 13 February, 11am – 3pm
China Spectacular 

Celebrate the Year of the Tiger with a lion dance, food tasting, Chinese lantern making, music and stalls selling Chinese crafts.
1pm – 3pm Make a Chinese New Year decoration.

Monkey: Journey to the West
Join Noisy Oyster Theatre Company for a fantastic puppet show performance.
 
Friday 26 February, 6 – 7.30pm
Lantern Parade
Join Sunderland schools as we take part in a beautiful lantern parade around Mowbray Park, with hot drinks in the museum afterwards.
 
Wednesday 7 April, 11am, 1pm & 2pm
Feast of Food 
Make food dishes from clay to create a feast for the afterlife. Collect your free tickets from museum reception at 10am.
 
Friday 9 April, 11am – 3pm
From Tea to Tigers 
Symbolism trail of plants and animals in China. See a traditional tea ceremony and taste different teas. Drop in activity with tea tasting at 11.15am, 1pm & 2.15pm.
 
Wednesday 14 April, 11am – 3pm
Chinese Games Galore 
Find out about popular sports and games in China with a day of demonstrations and have-a-go activities. Make a kite, try kung fu, table tennis and Chinese chess.
 
Friday 16 April, 11am, 1pm & 2pm
What a Performance! 
Make Chinese opera masks and listen to Chinese opera music.
