Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens

The Art Gallery at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens has acquired exciting new works from two artists, Jeffrey Sarmiento and Brian McCann.

Previously on show at the Bullseye Gallery in Portland, Oregon, the works are an exciting new feature for the Art Gallery. They will be displayed alongside the museum’s selection of paintings and watercolours from various periods, including a popular collection of work by L S Lowry.

Jo Cunningham, manager of Sunderland Museums, says:

"We are delighted to welcome the work of both Jeff and Brian to Sunderland. Although the Art Gallery has all the splendour of a Victorian collection, the diverse range of contemporary additions are also much admired by guests. We're very grateful to the Contemporary Art Society, who we have to thank for these fine donations."

Filipino American artist Jeffrey Sarmiento uses his work to explore his own cultural identity. His Triple Self Portrait 1 & 2 cleverly combines images of himself, his father and grandfather. Jeffrey’s work was short-listed for the prestigious Bombay Sapphire Award in 2008.

Brian McCann’s Mixed Media on Canvas is an exploration of the relationship between the visible and the hidden, using a combination of photography, painting and printing. Brian’s previous work was short-listed for the esteemed Charles Wollaston Award at the Royal Academy’s Summer exhibition in 2000. He was also the first Tate Fellow in Art at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool.

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, and Sundays 2pm to 5pm. Free entry.
