Making history: 300 Years of Antiquaries in Britain
11 Jul - 04 Oct 2009
Making Historyoffers an opportunity to see rare and unique treasures from the Society of Antiquaries of London. Guest curated by celebrated historian Dr David Starkey CBE FSA, the show is based on the widely acclaimed exhibition shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2007. The exhibition explores the creation of Britain's heritage over the three hundred years since the Society was founded in a London tavern in 1707.
Making History
will celebrate the contribution of the society to
our appreciation of the past. Fascinating artefacts from the
society's own collections, which cannot usually be seen
by members of the public, include a lock of Edward III's
hair, a rare copy of Magna Carta and a spectacular bronze shield
more than 3,000 years old. They will be shown alongside items of
local interest, including objects from the World Heritage Candidate
site of Wearmouth-Jarrow.
