Friends for 30 Years
04 Dec 2009 - 24 Jan 2010
In January 1980 the first ever meeting of the Friends of Sunderland Museums took place. FOSUMS, as they are known, were established to support the work of the Museums in Sunderland through fundraising, promotion and advocacy.
They’ve seen many changes during their three decades including the relocation of the library, the multi-million pound HLF refurbishment of the Museum & Winter Gardens in 2001 and more recently the refurbishment of Monkwearmouth Station Museum. And they have raised many thousands of pounds to help preserve Sunderland’s proud heritage.
Thirty years later they are still going strong. FOSUMS hold their monthly meetings at the Museum & Winter Gardens, hosting family fun days and special events, recruiting new members and representing Sunderland Museums at many of the region’s heritage and local history fairs.
See their exhibition of photographs, memorabilia and acquisitions purchased with the help of FOSUMS in the Open Space Gallery until 24 January 2010.
