The Singh Twins: Retrospective
02 Oct 2010 - 03 Jan 2011
London born twin sisters Amrit and Rabindra are contemporary British artists of International standing whose award-winning paintings have been acknowledged as constituting a unique genre in British art.
This major retrospective of their work, spanning over twenty years, features some of the twins’ earliest works, their most famous pieces and latest public commissions.
Amongst these are Nineteen Eighty-Four (1999), their powerful and epic response to the Indian Government’s attack on the Golden Temple, Amritsar, in 1984; Arts Matters: The Pool of Life (2008) which was commissioned by Liverpool City Council and celebrates the city’s status as European Capital of Culture in 2008; Partners in Crime: Deception and Lies (2004), featuring George W. Bush and Tony Blair following the invasion of Iraq in the aftermath of 9/11; and The Greatest (2002) depicting Muhammad Ali in the conventional style used for depicting royalty within the Mughal School of the Indian miniature tradition.
The Singh Twins say:
“Our work bridges many worlds, the ancient and the modern; fusing both Western and Eastern aesthetics elements, using a traditional art form to deal with contemporary issues. Our aim is to introduce wider audiences to the beauty, richness and continuing value of tradition within contemporary art and society.”
The exhibition will also offer an opportunity to see The Singh Twins’ award-winning films - Nineteen Eighty-Four and the Via Dolorosa Project (a short documentary about their painting Nineteen Eighty-Four which makes links with the Christian tradition of Christ’s Passion) and The Making of Liverpool (their first animation, which combines the Indian miniature tradition with the latest digital technology.
