must-see exhibition
The Truth about Faeries
16 Jul - 23 Dec 2011
Enter a magical world of fairies and see some of the most enchanting images created by artists, story tellers and illustrators over the last 100 years.
The Truth about Faeries introduces mischievous and bad fairies such as brownies, goblins and trolls; good and beautiful fairies with gossamer wings; even fake fairies. From the golden age of illustration between the 1860s and the 1920s up to the present day, this exhibition features book illustrations by Arthur Rackham, Heath Robinson and Walter Crane and by the Pre-Raphaelite artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones.
See the famous Cottingley fairy photographs that once captured the world's imagination.
Cecily Mary Barker’s beautiful Flower Fairies and Eric Winter's illustrations from the Ladybird series evoke many childhood memories.
The fairy story is brought up to date with work by contemporary artists Brian and Wendy Froud.
The exhibition features a fantastic fairy grotto with dressing up, story books and activities to keep the wee folk happy – bring your own wings!
