Heritage Train Rides
Top off your Sunday visit to Stephenson Railway Museum with a ride on our heritage railway!
The Museum is home to working steam and diesel locomotives which offer a passenger service during the summer season - great fun for all the family.
Trains are pulled by either 'Jackie Milburn' our Peckett Steam Locomotive, or our '08' and '03' diesel locomotives
Train rides are available at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from April to November.
Train ride prices:
Adult: £2.45
Child / concession: £1.20
Family ticket (2 adults and 2 children): £6.10
Please note that train rides can be subject to availability of the locomotives - please call us on (0191) 200 7146 before you visit to avoid disappointment.

Shipley Scamps

Join the Shipley Scamps for a fun arts and crafts session every Wednesday morning during term time.
The group provides a great opportunity for you and your young family to enjoy being creative in an informal atmosphere.
The sessions are suitable for children aged 2 - 4 and offer a range of creative activities along with singing and stories.

The Railway Rascals
Thursdays from 10.15 – 11.30am (during term-time)
Join Geraldine for stories, singing and fun craft activities in the Children’s Gallery. Socialise with other families in a fun and friendly environment.
Only £2 per child and 50p per additional child with juice and biscuits provided.

Join the Museum Mice every Thursday in the Mouse House 10.30am-11.30am with Gallery Interprer Kathryn and meet the Great North Mouse.

Seashore Explore
Join the team from ERIC for a special trip to St Mary’s Island, Whitely Bay, North Tyneside (1-4pm). Free but booking is essential.
Delve into the rockpools of St. Mary’s Island with ERIC North East and the Great North Museum: Hancock to discover bladder wrack, edible crabs, sea squirts and dog whelks along with many other fascinating seashore creatures.
Booking is essential. Transport will be provided from the Great North Museum: Hancock to St. Mary’s Island and back again.

Amazing Owls!
Come face to face with Fuzz, Bilbo and Henry, some of the most amazing owls in the world. See an Eagle owl with a 7ft wingspan and a tiny owl no bigger than a mobile phone!
Admission is free and our friendly staff will be happy to answer questions, and tell you fantastic facts about the birds.
Weekdays from 11am – 3pm
Sundays from 2.30pm – 4.30pm
For anyone feeling adventurous, you can put on a glove and handle one of the owls under expert guidance from our falconers.
Charges apply for handling and having photos taken with the birds. Prices start from £3.95 for a small print

Come along to the Laing with your little ones and explore art in a fun and relaxed way. Sessions are one hour and include a story, an art/craft activity and a snack.
£2.50 for the first child and £1 for additional children.

Every Tuesday at Discovery Museum during term time come and join the Little Discoverers to create, learn and have fun!
Join us between 1.00-2.00pm to meet lots of new friends and have lots of fun in this free creative play session for preschool children! We hope to see you there!
