Heritage Open Days 2010 success at Washington F Pit
More than 700 people enjoyed the special activities at Washington F Pit which took place as part of this year's Heritage Open Days.
As well as craft activities for families, there was a parade with a miners’ banner from Washington Millennium Centre to the F Pit and performances by Houghton Brass Band.
The North East Bus Preservation Society also provided a vintage bus to take visitors on a tour to Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Monkwearmouth Station Museum, Fulwell Windmill, the North East Aircraft Museum and Washington F Pit.
Jo Cunningham, manager of Sunderland Museums, says:
'We were delighted to welcome so many people to Washington F Pit, which is a wonderful monument to the region’s coal-mining heritage.
'The free activities were enjoyed by all and the music and vintage bus rides all added to the atmosphere of the day.'Washington F Pit will re-open next summer.
