Explore Cookson's South Tyneside

South Shields Museum & Art Gallery explores the story of South Tyneside through sensational displays, hands-on exhibits and stunning art.

The Museum has three main displays: Tales of South Tyneside, which explores the local and social history of the area during the twentieth century together with the lifetime achievement of the successful local author Catherine Cookson. Art Adventure takes a fresh approach to the interpretation of many of the Museum's paintings. Land, River and Sea looks at how the natural environment has influenced the history and look of the area from prehistoric times to the present day.

The museum has regular exhibitions and a range of activities and events to suit all ages. Most of the events, like the Museum, are free of charge. Visit the What's On section for details.

South Shields Museum & Art Gallery is managed by Tyne & Wear museums on behalf of South Tyneside Council.

Closure of Land, River and Sea

Land, River, Sea is currently closed for an exciting new redevelopment which will see some of the Museum's most popular items such as William Jobling's gibbet and the model of the St. Hilda being re-displayed in a more vibrant and interactive manner. The works will also include a brand new cafe and seating area for visitors to enjoy and an improved Creature Corner display updating and adding more information about the amazing inhabitants. It is expected that the new displays will be open in spring 2008.
