Museum of Sanctuary

Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums is working towards gaining Museum of Sanctuary status as a recognisable symbol of safety and welcome

Why Museum of Sanctuary?

To show solidarity with the communities we serve.

To be part of a bigger movement of welcome and celebration for our communities who have experience of forced migration and sanctuary seeking.

To show our ongoing commitment to exploring the diversity of our communities, sharing stories inside and outside our museum spaces.

Our journey

In 2015, the Hatton Gallery developed its Home and Belonging project.

Since then we have further developed our programmes for those with migration backgrounds across multiple venues.

We are committed to continuing and enhancing this now and long into the future.
