Free museum and gallery events for National Lottery players

27 November 2018

Tyne & Wear Archive & Museums’ (TWAM) venues Discovery Museum, Laing Art Gallery, South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, and Hatton Gallery will be offering free events to National Lottery players during the week of 3-9 December 2018. They are one of hundreds of participating National Lottery-funded visitor attractions across the UK saying ‘thanks’ to people who have raised money for good causes by buying a lottery ticket.

The idea is simple: any visitor who presents a National Lottery ticket or scratchcard valid for 3-9 December at one of our participating venues can benefit from a free offer.

TWAM was awarded a grant of £813,100 from the Heritage Lottery Fund as one of the main partners working with NewcastleGateshead Initiative to bring the dynamic story of the North of England to life in the Great Exhibition of the North during the summer of 2018.

Iain Watson, Director of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, said:

“The National Lottery and the generosity of lottery players has fundamentally changed (and for the better!) the museum and heritage sector in the UK. I can still remember the excitement of those first lottery bids in the late 1990s. Every one of TWAM's nine museums and galleries has seen investment from the National Lottery, sometimes major capital projects and sometimes the equally important community partnership projects. This year I am particularly grateful for the amazing support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and National Lottery players which enabled us to bring Stephenson’s Rocket ‘home’ to the North East, to show the brilliant Which Way  North exhibition at the Great North Museum, and to create the award-winning website A History of the North in 100 Objects as part of the Great Exhibition of the North.”

Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said:

“December is a wonderful time to experience the UK’s rich, diverse and exciting heritage, which has been transformed by more than £7.8bn National Lottery funding since 1994.  This is a small gesture of thanks and a way of giving something back to the people who buy tickets.”
