Hugh Stolliday has been appointed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) as Commercial Manager to run its independent trading company, TWAM Enterprises Ltd.

Hugh joins TWAM Enterprises from Ouseburn Farm where he was Manager, leading the organisation through the Covid pandemic and transforming its visitor offer.

He previously founded and led the Summerhill Trust and has had roles in business development and marketing in the UK and Germany, including at the Natural History Museum in London.

He has lived in the North East since 2007 and is passionate about the region, its people and its heritage.

In his new position as Commercial Manager, Hugh will be part of TWAM’s leadership team with responsibility for all commercial activity, including retail, venue hire and catering operations across nine museums and galleries.

TWAM Enterprises was established on 1 May 2018 to undertake enterprise activity to provide additional financial stability for Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, in addition to the funding it receives from the four local authorities, Newcastle University and Arts Council England.

All proceeds from TWAM Enterprises are used to run the museums, galleries and archives, and to deliver TWAM's mission and commitments.

Hugh Stolliday, Commercial Manager for TWAM Enterprises, said:

“I'm delighted to be taking up this role with TWAM Enterprises.

“I'm looking forward to working with the amazing team to develop a thriving retail, hospitality and events offer, which is central to the long-term sustainability of our wonderful museums, galleries, Roman forts and archives. I can't wait to get started.”

Keith Merrin, Director of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, said:

“I am very pleased to announce Hugh’s appointment following the retirement of our former Commercial Manager.

“Growing sustainable income streams is essential so that we are able to continue delivering outstanding museum experiences and to support the delivery of our commitment to serve our communities.

“Hugh brings a wealth of commercial experience and a background working in the heritage and not-for-profit sectors. I am looking forward to working with Hugh.”

Hugh is a fluent German speaker and founded his own business while living in Munich. Die Wundertüte (the goody bag) provided marketing services to the arts and leisure sectors. It was successfully sold to Germany’s leading nightlife promotion company, Nachtagenten Gmbh.
